Nowadays a global scale-up of HIV testing and counseling (HTC) is commonly considered to be an integral part of HIV prevention. Thus, effective counseling helps prevent HIV-infection; people living with HIV who are aware of their HIV status can take measures to reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to their sexual partners and partners of injecting drugs; and pregnant women who know their HIV status, may reduce the risk to infect their child almost to zero level.
