Before World Remembrance Day of AIDS Victims, ECUO together with partners from 15 countries of European Region* representing 2 million of PLWH calls on governments to urgently take necessary steps to stop HIV / AIDS.
We are members of a large European family. Therefore, in all EECA countries HIV treatment standards should be consistent with European approaches identified by European AIDS Clinical Society’s 2016 protocol as much as possible.
Worldwide, HIV is no longer a verdict, but in EECA the epidemic is still growing rapidly. Twenty years ago people died from lack of medication; today there are enough drugs, but side effects arising from using obsolete medicines sharply reduce the life quality of PLWH. This leads to treatment rejection and contributes to HIV / AIDS spreading.
Using innovative drugs is a key factor in overcoming epidemic and increasing treatment coverage for all who need it in EECA countries. It should be noted that today only 1/3 of all PLWH have access to treatment in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
On the third Sunday of May, when the whole world remembers its relatives and close people affected by AIDS, it’s important to think about the future.
The future today is treatment with innovative Integrase Strand Transfer Inhibitor (INSTI) drugs for children, adolescents and adults.
* Member countries of ICO “Eastern Europe and Central Asia Union of People Living with HIV” are Europe. According to the WHO and International Bank classification, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Russia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan belong to the European Region.
